Move beyond traditional coaching constructs

Enterprise-wide Business Partner™

We need to move beyond traditional coaching constructs for ourselves and our leaders: to one of being an Enterprise-wide Business Partner™ to invoke a 360° – approach to coaching by considering all aspects of our clients…their organzation, their competitors, the environment, the government, economics, social justice and their personal lives.

Apparent singular client issues are no longer isolated and as coaches we must pay attention to everything our clients touches.

Coaches who believe in being Enterprise-wide Business Partners (EBP) with their clients

“These coaches help transform the lives of those leaders who transform the world.™”

Coaches who believe in being Enterprise-Wide Business Partners (EBP) with their clients

“These coaches help transform the lives of those leaders who transform the world.™”

In this role, the EBP approaches the engagement through a systemic lens and wears many hats.

As a “business partner,” the EBP can pivot, depending on the situation, between coach, trusted advisor, mentor, and consultant.

The EBP does not shy away from complexity and fully embraces the messiness in which their clients often find themselves.

The EBP comes with a 360º, multi-level perspective and belief system that embraces the client in the room while being completely aware of the impact of those not in the room.

The EBP knows the organization, the competition, the market dynamics, and much more.

As a result, the EBP becomes an integral part of the organization.

Expanding the Possibilities

Making Coaching Fun

Making Coaching Fun

We’ll explore where the “fun” in coaching lies.  Beyond the fulfillment, monetary and psychic income we derive from doing what we do, we’ll look at what makes it fun for us and those we coach.

Fun can be defined in so many ways — light-hearted pleasure, enjoyment, amusement, boisterous joviality, merrymaking entertainment — there’s probably a great deal more of it in our work than we may realize. So we’ll identify where it is and what it looks like — please be prepared to share your own personal stories of where you find fun in your work — how do we know when we experience it, what can we make of it, and what benefits do we and those we coach derive from adding more of it to the mix.

Key takeaways:

  1. Determine what “fun” is and where does it fit in the coaching process
  2. The differences between “fun” and “funny,” and what are the appropriate uses of fun
  3. Increase our sensitivity to the fun we derive from coaching
  4. Improve our creation of fun for our own benefit and the benefit to those we coach
  5. Have fun while exploring the fun in coaching

Tune In To Lead - The Leadership Imperative of Listening to Ourselves and Others

Tune In To Lead

We know that listening is a critically important leadership skill. This means listening effectively to others to build alignment, engagement and accountability. But equally if not more important is listening to our deeper selves to ensure motivation, high performance, and fulfillment.

Most of us don’t do either kind of listening very well, or very frequently. And that’s because true listening is hard to master; it’s fundamentally about being present, tuning in, and connecting to our personal purpose. How can we do that in an overstimulating world that’s becoming even more demanding?

This is a conversation about the benefits of and barriers to deep listening, and how we can do better for ourselves and our clients. A variety of strategies will be discussed. One specific innovative, yet traditional, experiential approach will be included in the conversation, namely engaging with horses- it may not be what you think!

Key take-aways

  1. The relationship between listening and engagement, effective decision-making, and personal fulfillment
  2. Strategies for successfully tuning in, both to others and to ourselves

Coaching Principals for Third World Countries

By serving the extreme poor in Myanmar, led to a cutting-edge movement in community-led development and powerful insights and expertise about global poverty.  The Shanta Foundation, an international NGO headquartered in Durango, CO, has a unique approach to community mobilization, leadership development, and community banking that would actually work, facilitating more than 35 villages to find paths out of extreme poverty, even in under the terror of the military dictatorship. As coaches—you get the potential inherent in the leaders you work with and how, with a little support and insight, most can become an even greater force for the good in their worlds.  But for some reason, most development approaches have yet to translate that dynamic to unlocking solutions to extreme poverty.  We are still bringing our colonialist, racist, sexist biases to this work, and despite incredibly sincere and expensive initiatives, we often end up either enabling or simply not helping those we aim to serve. We will discuss Shanta’s approach to the work because it is tightly aligned with the principles of the work that we do every day as coaches and consultants. And because it works—bringing about sustainable and outrageously uncommon results.

Key takeaways:

  • How and why traditional approaches to poverty reduction fall short
  • Key principles to activate local leadership and embed agency and sustainability into the work
  • How to become an influencer for unlocking sustainable solutions to extreme poverty

What is vertical development, and what might it bring to our coaching?

How Leaders Get Stuck

A discovery of what kind of leader your clients want to become and the ways they limit themselves from getting there. As leaders, we tend to make our decisions the same way every time. When we are in distress, we tend to get stuck in the same quicksand for our teams and our organizations. When leaders become frozen, the consequences to the organization, staff, productivity, profits, and workflows can be devastating. When leaders are stymied, choices for escaping the situation can be skewed and narrow, and solutions may seem non-existent.

Key takeaways:

  1. Objectives: Why is my capacity as a leader limited
  2. Learning how to unleash my potential
  3. Learning how to establish an aspiration to direct my goals and decisions
